Typically offshore fishing is a pay-to-play sport, with most gear costing a pretty penny and for good reason; when you get that one bite, a real bite, you need your gear to hold up under extreme duress. I’ve seen high-end super high modulus graphite offshore tuna popping rods sell for upwards of 800 bucks! Now look, we know that building high quality gear can’t cost nothing at all, but offshore fishing shouldn’t exclude all but the super rich. We set out to design technique specific rods that are both exceptionally high quality and fairly priced, so everyone can get a piece of the proverbial pie. The Dark Matter Popping rod was born out of that fire, and it most certainly fits that bill, coming in at $250. At 7’6” it falls right in the middle of rods that range anywhere from 7’ to 8’6”. We felt 7’6” was the Goldilocks length and, more importantly, the power range was perfectly spread out from tip to grip – there’s no weak point for maximum lifting pressure! Made from M3 Nano Carbon material, the Dark Matter Tuna Popping rods are extremely lightweight and exceptionally powerful, capable of lifting a pinwheeling yellowfin up out of the thermocline. During testing, (my favorite part of rod development obviously) I brought a prototype down to Venice, LA and literally first cast with a Shimano Orca popper, smoked a 155# yellow. The Dark Matter Popping rod fished great, I was able to put an ample amount of heat on the fish, and put her in the box in less than half an hour. A memorable trip to say the least.
